I think I'm back...

My tablet died, so I had to get a new one. The new model is considerably bigger, and consequently easier to type on. I'm going to try to resume semi-regular blogging... we'll see how I do.

I had to sign back into Facebook to save my progress on a few games. I took a brief glance at the first few items on my news feed, went "Nope" and will be deactivating the page again. I've been happier without it, although I *do* miss the interaction with a few friends & family members.

Still battling the fatigue issues, but my health is otherwise tolerably good. In an effort to be more active, I have started volunteering as a role player for training exercises at the police academy. THAT has been a freaking hoot! Most of the recruits are wet behind the ears kids, and the handful of older ones with some life experience still aren't prepared to deal with someone like me. One scenario I was in had me & another girl (who was almost as big as me) in a domestic issue where the ex-wife & new girlfriend started fighting when hubby tried to pick up the kids. She & I were having fun slinging furniture & throwing mock punches. The kids sent to stop us were both around 5'2-5'4 and probably less that 150 lbs each. The slightly taller of the two pushed his partner toward us, said "you deal with that while I talk to this dude." Little guy shrieked, "who, me?!?" We stopped fighting each other, turned & gave him evil smiles, and started his way. The assessor finally managed to stop laughing long enough to call a halt to the scene once it was clear that the kid was either going to wet himself or run, possibly both.

Another day saw me in a loud party scenario. I was paired up with Officer E, who is also a big girl, and another civilian. The kids were "dispatched" in groups of 3 this time, not that it did them much good. All 3 of us escaped custody, they usually didn't find the drugs & weapons hidden on us, and the piece de resistance was the final group. We were in a second floor room for this exercise, and had been heckling a group that was below us outside. (The training staff were in hysterics by the end of the day because E & I were being total heathens) We got what turned out to be our last group. As they burst into the "party" (which they did incorrectly) & turned our music off, I was hit with inspiration. I went a couple of rounds of music off/on with the little guy closest to me (seriously, most of this class is 5'2-5'8) and then freaked him out. I screamed, "oh, snap, someone sent us a police strip-o-gram! Get them clothes off, baby!" E immediately caught on & followed suit. (Our 3rd comrade & the assessor were both laughing too hard to do anything) We started grinding on those boys and tugging at their uniforms. THEY panicked. In the middle of all this, I grabbed my guy's gun (not a euphemism, his actual mock weapon. Thankfully they weren't given real guns & tasers for these exercises) and ran to the window, tossing it out the the scenario out below us, allowing all hell to break loose in that one too. The trainers called time on us at that point.

We went downstairs to return our stuff to the prop boxes & join the session debriefing. Then I hear the Lt. say, "wait, that's not a prop, that's a recruit's gun!" followed by a bellow of "which one of you damn fools got disarmed and who did it?!?" The kid reluctantly confessed & pointed at me. Lt. M gave him quite an earful about it. He also dropped by my office that night to tell me that they'd watched the body camera footage of all the incidents (they didn't tell US that those damn things were live... oops) and had been laughing themselves sick for 8 hours. Especially at the last scene. "We never knew you were so good at being bad!"

I'm really hoping that footage never leaves the academy, but I suspect it's making its way around the department.

Today is Clean Out Your Fridge Day

This is actually a fridge I could aspire to. I'm not crazy enough to post a pic of my actual fridge- my mother would have a heart attack if she stumbled across that online!

This, on the other hand, is close to what our Office fridge often looks like. We won't discuss the smell.

Work or home, this is something many of us could benefit from!

Happy (1st) International Coffee Day

Apparently the 29th was National Coffee day, but I missed it because I was celebrating my dad's 82nd birthday. So, I'll celebrate this one instead!

The Best Workout DVD Ever

So, thanks to my addiction to British TV, I discovered the lunacy that is Miranda Hart. I love this woman- she is a British me...well, sort of. Unlike her semi-autobiograpghical character on Miranda, I manage to keep my clothes on in most occasions.

Anyway, as I was searching for more to watch, I discovered that Ms. Hart had made a workout video. Not just a workout video, but one even a hopeless klutz like ME can do. So of course I had to order it...and the one bit of equipment that it calls for:

Yep! I'm going to maracasize (shut up, it's a thing) my way to fitness! Dr. B will be proud...if he doesn't laugh himself to death first.

Recent Find on the Bookstore Clearance Table

Anyone who has been reading this blog knows that I love list making. Serious lists, goofy lists, grocery liusts; you name it. I tried my hand at a bucket list a few years ago and it got a bit overwhelming. Then I found this:

Seriously, how funny is this?!? I would never have paid full price for it, but the $3 I spent on the clearance rack was worth it! I haven't started filling it in yet, but have had a good time flipping through the pages and imagining what I'm going to write!

The Fifth and Final Listmania (for now, anyway)

Nine Things My Socks Would Say If The Could Talk

1. Not me again! Can't you wear a different pair today?!?

2. Um, hey, this isn't my mate!!!

3. Get that cat away from me! I'm not a chew toy!

4. Time to play hide and seek!

5. Cut your damned toenails already! I don't need holes poked in me.

6. Wait a minute...that shirt clashes with us.

7. Have you ever heard of odor eaters?!?

8. For god's sake, keep your shoes on at your friend's house! You want the whole world to see how many holes you've worn in us?

9. If WE'RE wet & cold, YOU'RE wet and cold!

Listmania the Fourth

Seven Things I Always Lose

(I decided to skip the list of things to say after you burp in favor of this one. You're welcome.)

1. My temper. Lots of people can attest to this one

2. My lip balm. I suspect it goes off to party with this next item...

3. My pens. It never fails, if I find a good pen with an ink color I like, it will vanish shortly thereafter.

4. My keys. I bought a carabiner clip so that I can attach them to my purse or belt loops. The problem now is REMEMBERING to attach them to said items.

5. My train of thought. I'll be in the middle of doing something and suddenly there's a chocolate pie in the fridge, but I'm waiting for a break to eat it and what was this supposed to be about?

6. My place on cross stitch charts. Even when I highlight the parts I've stitched, I still get off track.

7. My heart, to pretty British boys. Like this one!

It's World Juggling Day!

I never got the hang of juggling. I'm just not coordinated enough. I do enjoy watching it though!

The Third Listmania

3 Strange Things About My Toenails

1. They grow REALLY fast. I usually have to trim them every week.

2. The 3rd nail on my left foot was damaged in a car wreck when I was 21. Now it's permanently cracked down the center, but grows in 2 pieces and they grow at the same rate.

3. Nail polish doesn't adhere well to them at all. The few times I've bothered to do polish them, it has worn off in less than 3 days.

Listmania the Second

5 Superpowers I Wish I Had

1. Flight! I want to be able to swoop and soar through the breeze!

2. Invisibility. Although as a middle aged woman, I seem to be invisible already. Neat trick for a purple haired 6ft Amazon!

3. Telepathy. I have been told I can communicate quite effectively with my death glare. It might be nice to be able to communicate OTHER things though.

4. Telekinesis. Being able to move things without having to touch them would be great. Especially heavy loads that do my back in!

5. Shape-shifting could be fun.

Listmania the First

So, I read this book over the weekend and was totally charmed by it. A kid that makes lists? My kind of kid, and my kind of book. The best part was at the end, where the author helpfully provided lists to be filled in by the reader with a variety of goofy suggestions. Mind you, this is a kid's book, but I couldn't resist posting some for the fun of it.

Six Things I Would Like My Sweatshirt To Say

1. Quit Staring At My Chest!

2. No Vacancy

3. My Eyes Aren't Down Here

4. Loki Is My Love Slave

5. My Other Chest Has Drawers

6. What Are You Looking At?

Another list to follow next week! Just because I'm nuts like that...

I Haz A People And This Is Our Day!

Yes, it's National Pack Rat Day!

I plan to celebrate by pretending to clean my house, but actually just shifting piles from one spot to another. I'd throw stuff away, but you never know...I might actually need the collection of dead batteries in the kitchen junk drawer! Or find the lid that goes to that stained, pitted tupperware bowl.

Guess What Today Is?

No, it's not the day I'm finally committed to the wacko-ward. Although that IS probably coming soon.

Today is National Lost Sock Memorial Day!

That's right! Today is the day we celebrate all those missing socks...the purple argyle that was a present from your eccentric aunt, the zillion and one black/grey/white sports socks, the novelty lion print you couldn't resist on your trip to the zoo...wait, was that last one just me? Anyway, today is the day to gather around your clothes dryers and scream "Where? Where are they, rat bastard?!? Gimme back my socks!"

Happy Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day! It's Also Blue Monday...

No, really, it's a thing! See?

And if you don't have any bubble wrap to pop in celebration of this glorious day, there's always this!

Blue Monday is a special day, for people to focus on doing good for each other. Not necessarily presents and cards, just little acts of kindness (or big ones, if you like).

It comes at a time when people might need a bit of cheering up: the gloomy, post-Christmas, back-to-work-and-school month of January. And of course, it had to be a Monday.

Blue Monday occurs on the 3rd Monday of January each year. In 2015, this will be Monday 26 January.

A couple of years ago the organisers of the day had a thought. Wouldn’t it be good to start a new tradition that encouraged people to do nice things for each other? This inspiration then lead to the formulation of a wider day of happiness, and so Blue Monday was born.

Blue Monday ideas should benefit others (a person, an organisation or even internationally) and will probably be something you wouldn’t normally do (but might do regularly from now on), voluntary (compulsory kindness doesn’t really count), thought up by those involved (there’s no formula or template) and fun and creative (for everyone involved).

As long as your event is safe and doesn’t put anyone at risk of physical danger or emotional upset, then you’re on the right track!

Many Blue Monday events are on a small scale and are quite personal. If you want to do something bigger then that’s great, but don’t forget to find out what you need to do in terms of risk assessments, insurance and any other important factors. The only limit to your event or activity is your imagination!

So, have some fun and beat Blue Monday! (taken from this site)

This is what happens when I work a double shift and the office is TOO DAMN HOT

So, around the beginning of the shift, I posted on Facebook that the office was too hot and if it didn't start cooling off, I was taking off my pants. (I did NOT mention the shorts I had in my car to change into)

The responses to that ranged from "Whoo-hoo!" (thank you, Martin) to "Pictures or we don't believe you." (Be careful what you ask for)

About 3 hours later the temperature had actually RISEN 3 degrees, so the jeans came off. The shorts went on, and to amuse my friends, I took and posted a picture of my legs propped up on the desk. (From mid-thigh down so it looks like I'm running around the office in my underwear)

About 30 seconds after I posted it, my cell phone started ringing, the office phone started ringing, and my FB feed went nuts. The smarter of my friends figured it out, but still thought it was hysterically funny, especially as I've been in a very down cycle lately.
The more obnoxious of my officer friends started calling people and telling them to look at it. I've also been informed that a van load of guys on a stakeout nearly blew their cover when one found it and screamed "Holy shit, Mickey has lost her motherf'ing mind and is getting nekkid in the property room!!!" Amusingly enough, HIS SGT. was one of the first people to respond online.

So, if nothing else, I have at least had some fun tonight and made it go by a little quicker. And I'm sure I'll get an earful from my bosses on Monday...except for the one on my friends list who is probably choking on his beer.

If I ever figure out how to add photos to my blog, I'll share that shot. :-)

My Cats Are Nuts, But So Am I

The spate of nice weather that we've had has given both of the purr-beasts a bad case of spring fever. They've both taken to trying to escape at every opportunity, so I've been letting them go outside for a little while at varying hours. The hope is that they'll not get set on a schedule and expect to do this every day.

They both went out one afternoon. Malkin was ready to come back in after about 10 minutes. Nightshade, not so much. Then I heard frantic crying at the door, about 30 minutes later. I opened it to find Shady cowering on the porch while my neighbor Fran's little dog Remy was bouncing around her wanting to play. Apparently Shady is scared of dogs. Who knew? She sat there glaring at me. "Would you stop laughing and OPEN THE DAMN DOOR?!?" Remy tried to follow her in, but I shooed her back and gave her a pat to assuage her hurt feelings.

The next time they were let out, I left them to their own devices for about an hour while I washed my hair. I opened the door to find Shady waiting patiently on the top step. Turned out she wanted to use the litter box or she'd have still been roaming the yard. I maintain that the fact that every one of my cats should be indoor beasts and know it, because the first thing they do when they come inside is run to the box. If you're too dumb to know that outside is one big litter box, you're too dumb to live out there. Anyway, She came in, did her thing, and then decided to take a nap. I called for Malkin, who usually comes running when he hears his name. No sign of him. I put my shoes on and went to check the backyard. Sometimes he finds a patch of sunlight by the fence and goes to sleep or waits for me to come find him. No sign of him again. Now I'm starting to worry a bit. Malk is the Jethro Bodine of cats- Big, dumb, and pretty. I know he hasn't been hit by a car or anything, at least on our block, but don't see him anywhere. Then it hits me. Where does he wind up on the rare occasions I don't find him out back? Sure enough, he'd gotten confused and was on the neighbor's porch. "We don't live there, silly" I said, reaching for him. "Meow" was his reply as he rolled over to show me his belly.

Last Tuesday night was the best- Shady tore out the door as soon as I got home from work. I had just put food down for the feral cats and was somewhat concerned that this might lead to a fight. I looked out and she was head to head with the cat I call Jazz, both calmly eating out of the bowl. Then I saw Inky & Blot (the 2 black strays) slinking across the yard toward them. Nightshade whipped around, jumped to the bottom of the steps and stood there with her back arched, keeping them at bay until Jazz had gotten her fill. So at least now I know that they've bonded in case I ever need to bring Jazz indoors. I went to put my purse down, came back, and Jazz Was still at the bowl, sharing with Inky, while Shady & Blot were side by side on the pavement, grooming each other. Well, alrighty then. Malkin was dancing around my feet, so I turned him loose and went to make myself a late dinner.

10 minutes into dinner prep. I'm slicing boneless pork for stir fry and hear what sounds like my screen door slam. The problem is that I live alone and NOBODY should be just walking into my house. I whirl around with the knife in my hand, ready to slice the hell out of the fool who has DARED come into my home uninvited. Nobody's there. Then I SEE the door open a few inches again and slam shut. I walk a little closer and see a grey/white paw hook around the base of the screen door and tug. Damned if Greymalkin hadn't figured out how to open the door on his own! He just couldn't get it open far enough to get his fat little butt in before it closed on him. So once I stopped laughing at him and myself, I let him in. The other cats wouldn't play with him, apparently, so he wanted to come back in & cuddle with me.

Oh god, I'm well on my way to being a crazy cat lady...
