The Color of Love: A Mother's Choice in the Jim Crow South

The Color of Love: A Mother's Choice in the Jim Crow South

Reading this book was painful for me. Don't get me wrong- it's a wonderfully told story of love in spite of circumstance- but it hit VERY close to home. My interracial parents were married in the eastern part of NC in the same timeframe as this book and endured a lot of racism, including death threats when my mother became pregnant with me. To have to deal with alcoholism, family betrayal, racism and manage grow up without becoming insane is a testament to Gene Cheek's inner strength. I'd like to meet him someday.

As far as the book goes- I would highly recommend this to anyone, but especially to people who need to realize that love IS color-blind. You can't stop it, change it, or make it go away. Trying to destroy it because you don't like or understand it just tears everyone apart- epsecially the innocent- and leaves scars that never truly heal.

More of Ms Dorothy Parker

Men

They hail you as their morning star

Because you are the way you are.

If you return the sentiment,

They'll try to make you different;

And once they have you, safe and sound,

They want to change you all around.

Your moods and ways they put a curse on;

They'd make of you another person.

They cannot let you go your gait;

They influence and educate.

They'd alter all that they admired.

They make me sick, they make me tired

Vertigo- Lauren Baratz-Logsted

Vertigo
I've read Lauren's contemporary works and was interested to see how she'd handle a historical novel. I think she did quite well. Comparisons can be made to Madame Bovary, but that is not a bad thing.

It's fascinating to see how easily love and trust can be manipulated. Emma started out in a loving, honest relationship (or did she?) and the progression of her alternate relationship was slow and complex. It was an interesting look at how Emma's society viewed themselves and each other, especially considering that her correspondence with a prisoner fell dramatically outside the norm.

I was thrown a bit toward the end- was she losing her mind, or was it all an elaborate scheme? The thing I thought was best is that the reader isn't presented with a neatly wrapped ending. There are still threads to be followed, decisions to be made. One wonders what will become of our heroine.

Poetry Monday

I'm expanding this to include song lyrics- after all, some of the original epic poems were performed as songs to assist in the ability to memorize them, right?

Rest In Pieces- Nikki Sixx (the version performed by Saliva is AWESOME)

Look at me, my depth perception must be off again
Cause this hurts deeper than I thought it did
It has not healed with time
It just shot down my spine. you look so beautiful tonight
Remind me how you laid us down
And gently smiled before you destroyed my life

Would you find it in your heart
To make this go away
And let me rest in pieces
Would you find it in your heart?
To make this go away
And let me rest in pieces

Would you find it in your heart?
To make it go away
And let me rest in pieces

Look at me, my depth perception must be off again
You got much closer than I thought you did
I’m in your reach
You held me in your hands
But could you find it in your heart?
To make this go away
And let me rest in pieces
Would you find it in your heart?
To make it go away
And let me rest in pieces

Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding and the Meaning of Things

Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding and the Meaning of Things

This scared me a little- I've often thought I was on the slippery slope of becomng a hoarder and I saw a LOT of myself in some of the case studies mentioned. Hoewever, I also gained a little insight to why I do some of the things I do and how to get control over some of the others. And then my mother told me about the older relatives who really WERE hoarders....sigh.
